What is a Medical Exercise Specialist?

Bridging the gap between Healthcare and Fitness

Post-rehab clients are referred to a Medical Exercise Specialist (MES) after completion of a rehabilitation program (such as physical therapy, chiropractic, etc.) who then need a safe and effective fitness program tailored to their particular medical condition.  The MES is a fitness professional who not only works with the typical client looking to improve overall health, but also has the knowledge and skills to work with clients with a wide range of medical conditions.

An MES goes through a rigorous training and certification process to effectively and safely deliver exercise programs for clients with specific medical conditions.

What Does a Medical Exercise Specialist Do?

  • Perform safe and effective fitness assessments on all clients.

  • Perform a 12-point musculoskeletal screening on a medical exercise/post rehab client.

  • Understand the related anatomy and pathology of common medical conditions.

  • Identify red flags and warning signs indicating re-evaluation from a licensed medical professional.

  • Develop safe and effective conditioning programs for post-rehab clients.

  • Communicate effectively with medical professionals

The MES does NOT medically diagnose or medically treat patients. They assess ability to move and perform basic movement patterns, then select appropriate exercise programing based on individual needs, limitations, and ability.
